S.N.B. SERVICES AVAILABLE TO WOODLOT OWNERS

SNB provides a variety of services. The following is a general overview of services available to private woodlot  owners. If you would like additional information on any of the activities listed, please contact our office. (1-888-762-1555)

Preparation of Management Plans

S.N.B. Field Staff have extensive experience in preparing management plans. The format we use provides the owner with a description and prescription of the various stand types found on the woodlot, the access and the boundary lines. A prioritized action plan is then prepared designed to assist the owner in achieving their objectives. SNB provides a variety of services.  

Boundary Line Reconnaissance

This service is charged out at an hourly rate (currently $42.00/hour).  One of our qualified Foresters or Forest Technicians can give you a hand in the retracement of your old/deteriorated boundary lines by piecing together old evidence (barbwire fence, old blazes, rock walls etc..) and marking it with flagging tape.  Some of the tools we use are to assist us are a comprehensive GIS system, GPS units, sighting/hand compasses and string boxes.  Good lines make good neighbours.

Cruising

This service is charged out at an hourly rate (currently $41.20/hour). Similar to management plans, the cost per acre tends to decrease as the size of the property increases.

Inventory Appraisal

Basically the same format as a cruise, but is taken one step further to provide the owner with an estimate of the current value of the merchantable products on the property.

Culvert Sales and Installation

We sell a wide variety of plastic/polyetheylene culverts ranging in diameters from 6"- 48" and lengths from 10' - 30'. Couplers and geotextiles/filter fabric are available as well.  We also have Certified Installers ( by the Department of Environment) on staff that can provide you with a permit and the expertise to install a correctly sized culvert properly on your woodlot.                                                                                                                  

Trespass Cruising

This service can be used to determine the volume of forest products that have been removed as a result of a trespass; i.e. stump cruising.

Land Management Services

This service is designed to provide the owner with complete, professional management of their property, Based on the owner's objectives, SNB will co-ordinate all activities such as road construction, silviculture, harvesting and recreational development. SNB will act as the owner's agent, representing the owner's interests. However, owners can access this service for simply harvesting one stand. All harvesting is geared toward alternative methods. Cost of this service is based on a percentage of revenue and will vary depending on activities.

Provincial Silviculture Program

S.N.B., one of seven woodlot owner organizations in New Brunswick, is responsible for the delivery

the Private Woodlot Silviculture Program to woodlot owners throughout New Brunswick. Financial assistance is provided for pre-commercial thinning, reforestation and related treatments at the rate of 80 - 90% of the recognized costs. S.N.B. also has an arrangement with local industry in which they contribute an additional 50% of the owners out of pocket cost. This program is delivered on a first come, first serve basis.

Pre-commercial Thinning & Reforestation Services

SNB has its own tree planting and pre-commercial thinning crews located throughout the SNB area. Our net costs (after government assistance) are competitively priced.

S.N.B. Forest Management Fund: General Fund Assistance Programs

Through our forest management fund, SNB provides financial assistance to woodlot owners for a variety of silvicultural treatments including: commercial thinning, semi-commercial thinning, crop tree release, variable thinning, uniform shelterwood cutting, uniform selection harvesting, release cutting, under-planting and inter-planting.

Landowners Information System

We have a comprehensive GIS computer system that provides a listing of ownership of all parcels of land in the SNB area.

Aerial Photography

SNB has a complete 1982/84 aerial photo coverage for our area which landowners can borrow at no cost. We also have 1993,'94,'98, '01, '03 and '04 photo coverages to provide us with the most up-to-date infromation for all of our service areas.  Although we do not lend these photos out, owners can access them in our office.

Marketing

Probably our single most widely accessed service is marketing dealing with ± 40 mills throughout New Brunswick and Maine. This function of our organization provides sales to the tune of $20 + million to over 1,100 woodlot owners and producers annually.

Working Woodlot Program

This is a voluntary program designed to recognize and assist owners who are committed to practising sustainable woodlot management; and thereby contributing to a better managed S.N.B. region on an ongoing basis.
